Main Article Content
Abstract
The position of women in India has been subject to many changes over the span of recorded Indian history. Their position in society deteriorated early in India’s ancient period especially in the Indo-Aryan speaking regions. Manusmriti also declares that “women must be honored and adorned” and “where women are revered, there the gods rejoice, but where they are not, no sacred rite bears any fruit.” According to Manusmriti, ‘those who desire prosperity should ensure that women in their family are always happy and do not face miseries. A family where women remain unhappy due to misdeeds of their men is bound to be destroyed. And a family where women are always happy is bound to prosper forever.
